History
Originally established in 1995 by Simon May as a Yacht and Motor Boat skipper/delivery, servicing, repair and refit company, Boatcare is today a specialist marine survey and consultancy practice providing a range of tailored professional services to the boat owner, the boat buyer and the marine industry.
Technical Qualification
Simon May is an experienced and qualified specialist yacht and small craft surveyor having studied Yacht & Boatyard Management, Yacht Design and Manufacturing, and Yacht and Small Craft Marine Surveying.
These specialist marine industry applied technical courses cover all aspects of yacht & boat design and manufacture, applications and use, legislation and safety requirements, and marine surveying techniques including defects and repairs. As an RYA Yachtmaster and experienced sailor and motor boater Simon May has a unique appreciation of all aspects of the marine leisure industry.
This knowledge is regularly kept up to date with specialist Surveyors forums and training courses and close liaison with the leading areas of boat building development.
Practical Experience
With over twenty years of successful yacht surveys and over forty years hands on experience in the boat industry Simon May has surveyed and worked with most types of craft and situations representing many of the established major British, American, and European manufacturers of sailing and motor yachts. He has assessed numerous boats of all types for clients and the marine trade and as the man on the inside he has witnessed and solved design, manufacturing, systems and warranty problems and has an in depth knowledge of the potential problems and maintenance requirements of today’s pleasure craft.

As a senior Full Surveyor Member of the YDSA (The Professional Yacht Brokers, Designers and Surveyors Association) and the IIMS (The Professional International Institute of Marine Surveyors) and former broker member of the ABYA, and as a qualified Boat Safety Scheme Examiner, Simon May is fully accredited and experienced to offer independent advice and guidance on all aspects of the selection and purchase of a new or pre-owned boat, from a pre-purchase condition assessment and valuation, damage assessment and repair specifications, to the correct title and vat documentation and liaising with brokers and agents and to successfully resolving any issues arising from the survey.
